For the period of January, 2011 - May 2013 PCF "STEELCON", by chairing the construction &mounting consortium,had supplied and installed 22.788t of the main framingsteelfor canopy, as well as 4.036t of temporary support steel. The height of the dome is 75 m; the span of the main arches is 285 m. More than 280 tons of high-strength bolts were installed.
LLC PCF "STEELCON" provided full engineering support for the structural steel supply from country’s major producer factories.
The architectural concept of the Central Stadium was developed by a consortium comprised of: SUE“MNIIP Mosproekt-4” (research institute), the architectural officePopulous (UK), project management specialist Botta Management Group (Switzerland) and construction contractor ZAO “INGEOKOM Unite”
The Central Olympic Stadium was originally designed as one of the most grandiose structures of the Olympic Games, their architectural symbol. Its composition is absolutely unique for Russia.
Stadium’s proximity to the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains largely determined the choice of the architectural concept. The idea of contrasting the mountains and the sea became the main source of inspiration for architects.
The main elements of the roofing structure are arches 285 mspan and 70 m height. Each of the two 4-chords arches hasrectangular shape in cross-section and deviation from the vertical axis by 14º towards the stands.
The cross-section of the main arch is designed with a variable altitude of 7.0-14.4 m and a width of 5.5 m. On the southern and northern sides of the structure, the main arch is rigidly restrained in the foundations abutmentthrough four chords and an arch bracing system on the cross-arms.
The lateral stability of main arches is ensured by a number of secondary semi-arches that extend perpendicular to the main ones. The step for the parallel semi-arches is mainly 28 m, the span is 18-71 m, the cross-sectional height is 2.5-8.5 m.
Topped by two spectacular half-shell structures covered with translucent polycarbonate tiles whichgradually changes the transparencydegree of the panels: from almost transparent over the central part of the stadium to less transparent along the edges of the covering.The roof is made from translucent ETFE panels, which weigh 1% of traditional glazed materials. The use of ETFE provides a lightweight and sustainable solution that offers excellent climate conditioning within the stadium space. For the first time in the construction of a large-scale structure, a translucent polycarbonate roof was used which gives the building an appearance of snowy peaks, ensuring it sits in harmony with the landscape of the Imeretinskaya Valley and the Caucasus Mountains.In the building’s design safety for visitors, workers, and athletes was paramount
