In accordancewith the Rostov-on-Don general layout, the World Cup 2018stadiumhadappeared on the left bank of the Don River. The southern border of the construction passes along the city, and the northern border faces the Don.The arena appeared on the artificially created embankment: the only downtown bridge was leading toan empty wetland and it's precisely here that the new stadium was built. Its plot of 36.4 ha was covered with water for part of the year, so it had to be filled with massive amount of alluvial material (1.6 m3) to raise the ground by 6 meters.
As a result of the construction of a new stadium in the left-bank zone, this territory will receive a powerful impetus to the development of transport, engineering, communal and energy infrastructure. It is planned that the arena will become the center of the urbanized landscape, which will unite the cultural, business and shopping and entertainment complexes with the complex facilities of the rowing canal.
The construction of a football stadium, which is a rectangle in plan, includes a pitch, tribune compartments with locker rooms and an adjacent communication zone along the perimeter. Around the arena is a landscape terraced landscaping of the territory. Initially, it was planned that the roof of the arena would be associated with two different altitude flying wings, which would cover the space of the four tribunes around the pitch. However, later it was decided to change the design documentation, according to which the roof will be a single closed structure with a rectangular cutout. The roofinghas 2 axes of symmetry. Now consisting of 46 identical long-span steel girders, it's covered with 49,500 m2 of PVC membrane. Its support columns are the tallest point of the stadium, at 51.5 meters.
The auditorium preserved a small piece of the initial concept, which suggested openings in two corners of the upper ring of seating. However, instead of opening towards the city on Don's right bank, the corners are filled with videoboards. Before the World Cup total capacity of the stadium was announced to reach 45,000 people, though only over 40,000 net capacity. Afterwards, in heritage mode, the size is to be slightly reduced, to under 38,000.
Behind the stands there are 5 levels of facilities. In total the building offers a floor space of 128,000 m2, of which almost half includes enclosed and heated surfaces. However, the most important developments are still to come around the stadium. More landscaping and leisure amenities are to grow in legacy of the World Cup, while large office and commercial investments are expected to bring the area to life further.
Now the stadium's most iconic element is its facade. Covered with perforated aluminium, the stadium has built-in LED illumination throughout its facades, coming to life at night. A separate large screen is built into the western elevation, from where vast majority of visitors approach the stadium.

Stages of construction
In August 2013, work began on the sandy alluvium foundation for the stadium. Work on the foundation was completed in May 2014. Stadium substructure construction commenced on October 2015. In December the construction site began to bring in heavy equipment and construction materials. In January 2015, crews began driving piles.
In March 2015, the stadium project was revised, reducing the cost of construction to 3 billion rubles. In the summer of 2015 pile driving was completed and superstructure construction began.
In December 2015, work began on the installation of theroofingsteel frame. In July 2016 work on the concrete stadium bowl began. In addition, builders started construction of the facade and began landscaping the adjacent territory to the stadium. In November 2016 the reinforced concrete work of the stadium main bowl was fully completed and the installation of support roof structuresbegan.
Besides, it is planned to develop a project to protect the left-bank part of the river Don from the negative impact of natural and man-made phenomena. In addition, a hydroecological framework of the territory will be formed.
